Whether because of the lower gas mileage, the convenience of finding parking, or just the freedom of the open road, motorcycles are popular on California roadways. Every vehicle is entitled to its place on the road, but because motorcyclists face additional dangers from traffic, they are subject to special laws that must be followed.

Motorcycle Traffic Laws
All Stockton drivers, including motorcyclists, must follow the same traffic rules and carry the same minimum insurance amounts under California law. However, the state is well known for prioritizing motorcyclist safety and enforces several additional rules that apply specifically to the motorcycles themselves and the gear necessary to ride legally. Bikers should familiarize themselves with these requirements to avoid legal trouble.
Class M Driver’s License for Motorcyclists
Due to the additional risks motorcyclists face, the state requires them to hold an M1 driver’s license. To obtain this type of license, a driver must pass the regular driver knowledge test, as well as a motorcycle knowledge test and a skills test. Alternatively, they can present a certificate obtained by completing the California Motorcyclist Safety Program Training Course in lieu of the skills test.
Lane Splitting Safety
One reason motorcycles are popular in California is that it is one of the few states where lane splitting is legal. Lane splitting refers to driving a motorcycle on the line between two lanes of traffic. However, even though it is permitted, motorcyclists are expected to exercise caution and good judgment before choosing to lane split to make sure it will not endanger other drivers.
Requirements for Motorcycles, Helmets, and Suggested Gear
There are a few rules that apply to motorcycles themselves. Motorcycles must meet three main conditions. First, the seat must be low enough that the driver can touch the ground with their feet. Second, the handlebars must be within six inches above or below the driver’s shoulder height. Third, the motorcycle must have one or two lighted headlamps that must be engaged when it is dark outside.
All motorcycle drivers and passengers must wear a helmet anytime the vehicle is on, even if they are not in motion. The helmet cannot just be any helmet, either. It should have a label showing that it meets the requirements of U.S. DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218.
Though it is not required by any traffic law, the California Department of Motor Vehicles also suggests that Stockton motorcyclists wear other protective gear, including a long-sleeved jacket with reflective material, long pants made of a heavy or durable material, closed-toe boots that extend above the ankle, and full-fingered leather gloves.

Staying safe on the road requires cooperation between drivers and motorcyclists. Regardless of the type of vehicle someone is using, traffic laws work best when all drivers are paying attention, using good judgment, and treating others with respect.
