Motorcycle Traffic Laws

One reason motorcycles are popular in California is that it is one of the few states where lane splitting is legal. Lane splitting refers to driving a motorcycle on the line between two lanes of traffic. However, even though it is permitted, motorcyclists are expected to exercise caution and good judgment before choosing to lane split to make sure it will not endanger other drivers.
Requirements for Motorcycles, Helmets, and Suggested Gear
There are a few rules that apply to motorcycles themselves. Motorcycles must meet three main conditions. First, the seat must be low enough that the driver can touch the ground with their feet. Second, the handlebars must be within six inches above or below the driver’s shoulder height. Third, the motorcycle must have one or two lighted headlamps that must be engaged when it is dark outside.
All motorcycle drivers and passengers must wear a helmet anytime the vehicle is on, even if they are not in motion. The helmet cannot just be any helmet, either. It should have a label showing that it meets the requirements of U.S. DOT Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218.
Though it is not required by any traffic law, the California Department of Motor Vehicles also suggests that Stockton motorcyclists wear other protective gear, including a long-sleeved jacket with reflective material, long pants made of a heavy or durable material, closed-toe boots that extend above the ankle, and full-fingered leather gloves.
